Last Night I Dreamt I Went To Manderely Again

First of all, check out the poll to your right! Should this blog have a Facebook page???

Also, my blog now has it's own domain! www.lovewokemeupthismorning.com. :D Which is really exciting, but I'm still working out all of the kinks. So bear with me!

Now that you've done that... onto the 30 Day Book Challenge!

Day 19: Favorite Book That Turned Into A Movie

While there are several book and movie parings that I love - this is the one I have to choose.

I saw the movie first when I was younger (probably Jr. High age? Maybe?) and I loved it! Which is odd, because it's a movie/story that is actually really creepy and I hate scary movies.

The story I'm talking about is Rebecca by Daphine DuMaruier and the 1940 movie by Alfred Hitchcok.
The main character (played by Joan Fontaine and remains nameless in both the book and the movie) meets Maxin DeWinter - a handsome and wealthy widower (played by Laurence Oliver) - while acting as a "companion" to a woman in Monte Carlo. They have a whirlwind romance and in a short amount of time they are married, and he takes her home to Manderley in England. It is here that she hears and learns about Maxim's first wife Rebecca, who died tragically a year ago, whom apparently Maxim has been mourning for terribly. She also meets Rebecca's housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (played by Judith Anderson), a terrifying woman who is fiercely devoted to the first lady of the house. Yet, all is not as it seems at Manderley.

The book is wonderful and the movie sends chills up and down your spine. DuMarier I believe wrote a few other books, but none that received the fame and recognition that Rebecca did. Vivian Liegh was also up for the role of the main character, and while I love Leigh I feel as though she would not have the gentle and timid demeanor of the character the Joan Fontaine did. Laurence Oliver is a wonderful Maxim who is haunted by the past while still being devastatingly handsome and charming. Then Judith Anderson is a perfect Mrs. Danvers - a character that still gives me the creeps whenever I think about her.

There was another movie made in the 1990's I believe and was made for TV. It was done well - but not with the brilliance of Hitchock. (But seriously... no one will ever be as good as him.)

I found this video on youtube that gives some great clips and a wonderful feel for the story. Just ignore the random subtitles in another language.

Another book/movie combo that I feel deserves a shout out though is The Chronicles of Narnia- The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. I love these stories and I love the movie! It's my favorite to watch at Easter.

  1. I love Rebecca!! I read it half a dozen times in three weeks in 1998. I was in France on a school trip and stupidly only took that and P&P with me...

Mrs. Danvers is terrifyingly creepy. I'm SURE I must have seen the movie version at some stage, but I can't remember for sure. I'll have to try and get hold of a copy on DVD!!

  2. Congratulations on the new domain, and btw, I DO think it should have a facebook page if you're serious about making this blog a permanent fixture of your life, and possibly a career. It just opens up to a whole new audience.
