Miley Cyrus Makes Me Cry

Day 5: A Book That Makes You Sad

At first, I didn't want to read it. I mean... freaking Miley Cyrus was on the cover for crying out loud. I tried to find a copy that didn't have her face, but I simply couldn't. Going up to the counter to buy the book was humiliating. What respectable 24 year old buys a book with Miley on the cover? I mean, really. But the movie was coming out, I was sure some 8th grade girl was going to want to go see it, and it was by Nicholas Sparks. I've never seen a movie or read a book of his that I didn't like. So... I bought it.

And.... I liked it.

Yeah, I was shocked too. Well, not horribly shocked. It was a Nicholas Sparks book after all, but it was a Nicholas Sparks book that he wrote so Miley Cyrus could be in the movie. Yet... it was really good. But, it did make me sad.

I usually get really into books. Seriously, when I end a really good book I go through a short mourning period because I miss the characters. The weird thing though - I rarely actually cry when it's sad. It's the same with movies. I'm overly emotional about every aspect of my life and get crazy into books, movies, and TV shows. But actually crying during them... I just can't do it. Don't ask me why, but that's how it is.

Then I read The Last Song.

During the last few chapters there was something inside of me that snapped. I remember reading the end and sitting on my bed bawling my eyes out like a baby. I couldn't control it. I thought about friends and family members who had cancer, or were having health problems, and thinking about what it would be like to lose them - if I hadn't lost them already. I simply couldn't stop. Seeing the movie wasn't as bad, which I'm glad because I did end up seeing it with one of my 8th graders and I didn't want to cry in front of her. But it still made me so sad.

It wasn't just that either - but thinking of the other teenage characters in the book. Thinking about what their lives were like and how many teenagers I know who have a lot of the same issues. It simply breaks my heart.

So... there's my confession of the day.  A book with Miley Cyrus' face on it made me cry like no other book ever has. What books make you all cry?

  1. Time Traveler's Wife...definitely made me tear up... :P Twilight... I cried of how much it just really really sucked... I mean c'mon... it's like a 15 year old wrote that story, and I can do better than that!!!

  2. I've been meaning to add Time Traveler's Wife to my list of books to read! I've heard a lot of good things about it. Then Twilight... sigh. I like to call it the junk food of fiction. You know it's bad, there is nothing good in it, but you read it anyways and can't stop. BLAH! Oh Stephanie Meyer what you have done!

  3. I was laughing so hard at your intro! In fact, I'm still laughing!

I'm just like you. I'm an emotional person. I don't wear my emotions on my sleeve; I wear them on my forehead! But, when it comes to crying in movies and in books... it rarely happens. I get emotionally attached to the books, but the tears just don't fall. When they do come, it's waterworks!

And what you described about mourning the characters when a book ends? Dead on. I do that, too! I also can't start a new book right away because I'm still mourning the 'loss' of the last one!

  4. I'm glad I made you laugh! I was seriously searching the whole store for a book that didn't have her face on it... I was so embarrassed!

Share with me your thoughts! They make me smile.
