Be Peter Pan

On Tumblr lately, I've been seeing a lot of Peter Pan love. Not necessarily the movie. The guy who played Peter Pan at Disneyland for a long time.

I saw this written about him a few days ago:

Then soon after, I found a whole batch of other stories about this guy. (You can find them here: http://xxbecstarrittaxx.tumblr.com/post/52949430893

Encouraging kids to never grow up and keep going on adventures

Telling his "lost boys and lost girls" how brave they are.

Standing up for kids he would see in the crowds getting picked on.

Helping kids with disabilities and telling them that they are his heroes.

It's pretty awesome to read about. I'm also fairly certain he married the girl who played Wendy, so if that's not one of the cutest things you've ever heard of in your life, I don't know if we can be friends.

I don't know about you - but it's so refreshing to hear about people doing awesome things. There's always bad news and sad stories of people getting hurt, hurting others, and all of the awful events of the world. So when we hear of stories like this, it's a breath of fresh air.

Then, when I think about it, the things this "Peter Pan" did are nothing difficult. I can't help but wonder "why aren't there more stories like this?"

We don't have to be Peter Pan to encourage and help others.

You don't have to dress up in a costume and work at Disneyland to tell someone that they are your hero or you think they're beautiful.

We see people who are hurting every single day.

Why do we feel like we need to be someone "special" to help them?

Why do we feel like we need to do some big gesture to give hope to someone?

It's Monday morning and we all are probably tired and dragging ourselves out of bed to go to work or go about our normal routine. But this week, maybe try and find a simple way to help someone out and show them that they are important. Give them an encouraging word or a hug or even just a smile. It doesn't have to be big. Just something genuine.

This week, be Peter Pan.

  1. Oh wow. I've seen little bits on Tumblr and I've loved how he treats everyone, but that first quote. Jen and I both have those battle scars. Gah, made me all misty. He sounds like such a truly special, wonderful guy. Love this!

    1. I've missed you too!!!!!! But I know some people haven't had all of their Google Reader subscriptions transferred over, so that might have been it. So glad you found me again though!

  2. Awesome awesome awesome post!! I am always so moved when I hear stories like the one you just described. During the school year I set a goal for myself everyday: to talk to and compliment all of my students before the bell rings at the end of the day. So many people have told me that they felt bad about them self as a kid because their teacher never talked to them. If my opinion and attention can help my kids, it's the least I can do to take that extra effort to give one on one time to everyone.

    1. Thanks! That is such a great goal to have, and I know I need to do that too. I know there are a lot of times I get impatient and don't act as understanding as I should. But I want the youth to know they are important to me, so it's something that I'm working on!

  4. I've been seeing that all over Tumblr too! I wish all the characters at Disneyland were that great. Apparently his real name is Andrew and he has his own tumblr account: http://andrewducote.tumblr.com

I also read that he isn't Peter anymore because Disney let him go for getting to old which really sucks. But he did marry Wendy so yay for him!

  6. This is an absolutely beautiful post. I am glad I found it in your archives. I have seen and heard lots of stories about this particular friend of Peter Pan and I admire his courage. The way he (and Peter) influence people to follow their dreams is something to be proud of.
