That Makes Me Very Angry

I've been LOVING all of your comments and how you all have been getting into the 30 Day Harry Potter Challenge. Feel free to comment on the posts and share your opinions on each day's challenge question - if you agree with me, or if you have a different opinion! I love hearing your thoughts. Also, if you want to catch up on the other Harry Potter posts I have created a page for all 30 Days. You can look ahead to see what questions are coming up  too! http://www.lovewokemeupthismorning.com/p/harry-potter.html

Day 3: Are there any film adaptations that have made you angry because they ignored important parts of the book?

Typically, I am forgiving of movies and books being different. That's the nature of things. In most cases you simply can't do everything perfectly the way the book does. It just doesn't happen. The way a movie tells a story, and the way a book tells a story are two completely different things. So when most people rant and rave and get all upset because a movie didn't get a movie right - I just shrug my shoulders and move on. I see movies based on books more like something fun and extra on the side - not the real deal.

So for the most part, I've really been happy with the movies. However, I will admit there are some things I do wish they had put in there.

In Harry Potter and The Prizoner of Azkaban, I really wish they had gone into more details with the MaraudersI really enjoyed in the book getting to know Harry's dad and learning about the map and everything. Also, in Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix, I wish they had been able to show how Harry and Cho Chang really ended their relationship. While Cho isn't my favorite character, and I knew it wasn't going to last between the two of them, I wish the movie hadn't portrayed her as the one who betrayed the DA. It made me sad.

Although, the biggest thing I really wish they could have done in the movies is show a bit more of Harry and Dumbledore's personalities. What you read in the books is somewhat different than what you see in the movies. Dumbledore is ridiculously random and cooky. People think he's a little crazy - and he just might be! Then Harry is actually really sarcastic and a bit of a rebel in the books. While you see that somewhat in the movies, you don't see the full extent. From day one you see Harry's sarcastic side and how he'll mouth off to Dudley. It's pretty funny. Harry even somewhat enjoys breaking the rules.

  1. **SPOILERS**

I was SO angry when I walked out of Half-Blood Prince. The whole reason that Draco spends the entire movie/book trying to fix the Vanishing Cabinet is so he can lead a whole army of Death Eaters into Hogwarts for a big battle. And then what? He finally fixes it, lets a handful of Death Eaters into Hogwarts, and they all stand around and watch Snape kill Dumbledore and then leave. What???? It makes no sense! Plus they had to add the stupid cornfield scene where they destroy the Burrow and then had to pretend it never happened in the next movie. So stupid!!!

OK, I'm calming down. I should just write my own post if I want to rant so much :)

I think the things you mentioned would have been nice, but as you noted, they're things you get more from reading the books than can really be captured in a movie. (Except for Cho betraying them. That was just stupid.) When I watched The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe it was annoying that they included things that only make sense if you've read the book and know what's going through the character's head at that moment. But unfortunately every medium has its downsides :P

  2. I agree about the portrayal of Dumbledore. It's all wrong. The scene comes to mind in Goblet of Fire where Dumbledore is shaking Harry by the shoulders and snarling "Did you put your name into the goblet of fire???!!" .. that is SO wrong!

  3. I completely agree that they got Dumbledore all wrong in the movies.

  4. I agree with Jessica, the way Half-Blood Prince ended was craptacular in comparison to the book.

But the bit that made me most angry? It's kind of random, but I adore the part in Deathly Hallows after Ron destroys the Horcrux where Ron's crying and Harry tells him that Hermione cried for a week after Ron left, and that she's like a sister to him. For me, that moment just says so much about Ron, and I'm extra cranky that they left it out of the movie...

  5. @Melbourne

I totally forgot about that! I was actually waiting for that line while watching the movie but then I got distracted by the naked make-out session. Agreed--they should have included that. I don't know if people who haven't read the books will get that there really is no love triangle or anything going on.

  6. I know this is a little behind the times, but I was really upset in Deathly Hallows part 1 when Harry wrestles Malfoy's wand out of his hand rather than disarming him, which I feel like totally changes the thought that Harry was the master of the deathly hallows.
