"It's amazing." they said.
"I cried so hard during that show!" they told me.
"Everything is so clever and thoughtfully put together." they said.
So I watched. I opened up Netflix on my trusty laptop and typed in the title of the show. It popped up quickly, since it had been shown on my home screen several times under what they recommended for me.
After the first few minutes I couldn't help but think... "What the he** is this crap? Living plastic? Running? This awful dialog? Did they use my point and shoot camera to film this? Why did I let someone talk me into watching this ridiculously terrible show?"
I lamented to my friends.
"Just push through it," they told me. "The first few episodes are terrible, which is so sad because the rest of the show is so good. Just push through it."
Sigh. Fine. I'll push through it.
Then... I came to episode six. There was something about it. Maybe I had gotten used to the storytelling style. Maybe I had gotten to know the characters more. Maybe it was the introduction to the big villain. But suddenly, I understood. It all made sense! Something tugged at my heartstrings as I saw the episode unfold.
The episode was called "Dalek."
The TV show was Doctor Who.
And I've never looked back.

Yeah, it is kind of campy, and I too found 9 hard to get through. 10 and 11 were awesome, though.
ReplyDeleteI've found that re-watching the first season I appreciate it so much more because I know what's happening!
DeleteJen and I started series 5 earlier this month, and are already on series 7. I watched because I saw some gifs on Tumblr. So the 11th doctor is our first. He's the best. I don't care, about the ones before or after. Seriously. We both think so. The show is everything I adore in one. Sci-fi, fantasy, anything is possible, silly, sarcastic, time travel, science, history. You know how you're often asked, if you can go into one show, which show would that be? I would 100% say Doctor Who, and True Blood. I mean. Seriously. I was captivated by the very first episode. I don't know what I'll do when it's over (aka when the 11th doctor leaves). x.x I'll probably watch the series' before, and after. But they just won't be the same.
ReplyDeleteIt's probably very telling that I new immediately which show you were talking about because I had the exact same reactions to it.
ReplyDeleteHahahaha! I've been thinking about watching Doctor Who but haven't taken the plunge yet!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteDo it!!!!!
DeleteThis made me smile. When it used to be on when I was little, I used to hide behind the sofa whenever the dales came on. For some reason I was absolutely terrified of them! :-)
ReplyDeleteI tried Emily, I did...we made it thru 3 episodes. Then someone suggested that we skip to the next doctor so we did that and I still just...couldn't. I want to love it but it just doesn't grab me!
ReplyDeleteIt's so good though! And with the first season, it took me until episode 6. And honestly, each season gets better. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the David Tennant seasons. I know a lot of people have the 11th Doctor as their favorite and started there.
Deletei have never watched dr. who; even when it was on in the 80s. maybe i might watch it now?

Hells yeah!! Love me some Dr Who!
ReplyDeleteIt's so amazing!
DeleteI love love love Doctor Who! Although I really don't get how people don't like 9... he is my favorite Doctor. 10 is a close second though
ReplyDelete9 is my favorite too!!!!!
DeleteGIRL! I so so so AGREE! This was my life. It only gets better. I promise. You fall more and more in love with the characters and the story lines. man. I have cried multiple times (switching doctors and companions is the worst!)
ReplyDeleteand it is so magical.
ReplyDeleteHahaha, I couldn't even get through the first episode. It was so boring. I just don't get it.
ReplyDeleteummm yes. i didn't like it until the 6th episode either!...and i'm so glad my bestie told me to keep watching because i LOVE it. :)
ReplyDeleteYou have seen nothing yet until you get to 11. I tried watching previous seasons because friends told me it was "great". I watched and hated it. But then 11 came along and I gave it another shot....and fell in love. Also, HUGE BUDGET CHANGES starting at 11! Much improved quality, especially since BBC America is periodically involved in productions.
