Coffee Shop

Ever since I was a kid, I've loved the smell of coffee houses. There was a Gloria Jean in the mall and I remember walking by it and smelling the tempting aroma of the ground beans. At the time I had never tried coffee, but I was sure it was delicious because my dad drank it everyday and it smelled so good. They also had the best mugs and cookie jars my sister and I would peek at every time we were there.

Walking into my favorite Starbucks is no different. The smell is familiar and comforting. When I walk in, I soak the scent in and let my mind wander to what I'll be ordering that day.

This is my second visit today. The first was this morning when I got my fix before work. I didn't have time to sit and type - so today's blog prompt was the perfect excuse to let myself indulge again within the same 24 hours.

The baristas know me by name and know what sorts of things I like to drink. I don't have a regular, but some favorites. They all know now what sorts of combinations to recommend to me. (They recently had me try chai in a pumpkin spice latte. FANTASTIC!)

It's quiet this afternoon, which is nice. It was very crowded in here this morning, and after a long day it's nice to have someplace relaxing to go and sit and write. If I have time, I'll work on some of my Snow White story once I'm dong with this blog post before I run off to rehearsal.

There are only two girls in the coffee shop with me today. One is a quiet, speckled, brown-haired girl. She looks young and is sitting in a brown arm chair. Maybe early college. Yup. Definitely college. She has the local university lanyard around her neck. She plays with a mechanical pencil in her hand and occasionally writes in the spiral notebook on her lap. She hunches over after silently contemplating what she should write. As a writer, I'm familiar with her stare into space. She was probably brainstorming and imagining something in her mind. I've done the writers stare several times.

The other girl is at a table in the corner on her laptop. Probably another college student. Yup. I was right. There is some sort of sorority sticker on her laptop. College students are everywhere here. This girl looks more athletic though. Thin, muscular, messy bun piled hastily on top of her head and sporting a yellow t-shirt. I wonder if it's mid-term time.

A few other other people have entered as well, but they are sitting behind me and if I turn around to look I'll be a creeper. So that's probably not a good idea.

There are a few other girls sitting outside in the sunshine. They have a little dog with them that is incredibly cute and makes me miss Bandit.

It's chilly inside the store, but I don't mind right now. The temperature is nearing 90 today and since October is just around the corner, I'm ready to feel a bit cold. Why the weather won't pay attention to the time of year is beyond me. Bring on fall!

The people behind me are chatting, so I can't really hear the music playing in the background. But it's some sort of moody indie-rock that tends to play here. Which is nice. I'm not familiar with the artist or the song so I'm not paying much attention to it, but it does a good job of setting the mood. The harmonies are fantastic though. Have you ever been to Starbucks when music isn't playing? It's very eerie and I don't like it.

The store is starting to get busier, and if I want to get any other writing done I should wrap this up.

So... until tomorrow!

  1. I love this post! Sitting in a coffee shop is a very unique experience. I also love the smell of coffee (and the taste as well!)
