And NaNoWriMo day 1 is under our belts?
How did everyone do?
I'm not going to lie... my first day was a bit up and down.
Last night I ended up staying at a friends house later than I had planned, but it kept me up until midnight and when I got home I was ready to go! I sat down at my laptop and began to type away.
About 50 words in I was ready to hit the sack.
Then this morning I woke up and I was excited. Everyone on Twitter was buzzing about talking about their word counts and the NaNoWriMo Word Spring account was up and going. Call me a nerd, but I find the first day of NaNoWriMo incredibly fun and exciting. Everyone's energy is up and we have such high hopes for our little novels. We're itching to get going and start putting our ideas onto paper. We have been planning and plotting for weeks now... so getting to writing has been a long time coming.
My plan was to head over to Starbucks this afternoon and have a nice long writing session. I was going to host word sprints on Twitter and challenge my friends to word wars. I was going to get ahead of schedule and have at least a chapter or two done.
Then... I met a friend there.
We ended up hanging out all afternoon. (She made this amazing pumpkin frou frou thingy at my apartment and it was amazing.) Thankfully, this friend is another writer so a majority of our conversation through the day consisted of writing talk. We helped each other brainstorm and daydream about our stories. However... no words were written.
But never fear! As the night went on I grabbed my laptop and I got to writing. There were a few moments I got stuck and needed some extra inspiration, but I got through. In fact, I'm quite proud of my first chapter.
My total word count for the day is 1,668. While it's not as far ahead as I had wanted... I'm still pleased. (The word count goal is an average of 1,667 words a day.) A word ahead is a word ahead my friends.
What's awesome about NaNoWriMo this year though is that the first day lands on a Friday. Weekends are fantastic times for writing. Well... depending on your schedule. For many of us, we have at least one day off of work. Which means more writing time. It's the perfect time to catch up if you're behind, and to get ahead so you have some cushion for the rest of the month.
I always need some cushion in my writing. For me, I usually have a few days around Thanksgiving where I don't get a single word written because I'm spending so much time with my family. And eating turkey.
So... how did it go for the rest of you? How did your first day go? What are your weekend plans?
First few days have gone ok for me Friday I was awake early as had not had much sleep due to bad shoulder and back keeping me awake but thankfully it meant that I had nearly an hour in which to get start before work, yesterday seemed to be more of a struggle as my to do list was a mile long - but managed to make time in the evening to get some done. I worked out time this morning for my third day of writing and thankfully am on track strangely like you were first day - I'm exactly a word ahead of schedule!
