Harry Potter + Bible = AWESOME

What happens when you get two fairly creative type of people sitting around on a slow afternoon when neither want to write on the stuff they are supposed to be writing on?  You get something like this.  Now we (myself and guest co-blogger PM2) are not trying to be sacrilegious or irreverent but simply have some fun and get people to think a little bit.   Complaints can be sent to itisajoke@standrewcape.org.

So we started thinking, if you were going to recast the Harry Potter movies with Bible characters, how would you do it?

The Heroes

Harry Potter: Joseph (from Genesis with the Technicolor  Dreamcoat. Only for Harry it's invisible). Everything he touches seems to turn into gold, but none of it is his own doing. For Joseph it all came from God. For Harry it was through his friends. But both are heroes and born leaders, but incredibly young and naive.

Hermione Granger:   Mary the mother  of Jesus.  Hermione is the really smart one.  Who else would know as much about her son?

Ron Weasley :  Ron is the most loyal of friends.  He gives up a tremendous amount for the sake of his friend Harry.  The one Bible character who is known for his absolute loyalty to his friend, is Jonathan.

Dumbledore:  Got to be Moses.  Both very old, both very wise.  Both led their people and protected them from evil.

Severus Snape Snape is one of those guys you don’t really know whether he is a good guy or a bad guy until the end.  During the story he seems to do both.  The guy who fits this description in the Bible is King David.

Hagrid:  This one was tougher.  We decided Peter.  Both are a bit on the brash side, both tend to speak before thinking, but both very loyal and have a good heart.

Ginny Weasley:  This was Mary Magedalene.   Both have great hearts, a fierce love for the hero of the story (Ginny for Harry, Mary for Jesus).  Ginny may not have been a prostitute, but she did have a lot of boyfriends!

Neville  Longbottom: Neville is one of those guys  who shows incredible courage.  He does so in the first book when he tries to stop Harry, Ron and Hermione.  He  does so in the last book, when….(I won’t give it  away).   Daniel shows courage when he faces Nebecunezzer and when he ends up in the lion’s den.

Professor McGongal : Elderly, wise, a good advisor and a loyal friend.  This has to be Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist who had to have given advice and counsel to Mary.

Luna Lovegood: An angel. She's as sweet and kind  as a person can be, but not quite part of our world.

And Now For the Bad Guys...
He Who Must Not be Named:  This is too easy. If you can't think of who this is.... I'm sad for you.

Draco Malfoy: He bullies people around, thinks he is better than everyone else, but in reality is just really annoying. He must be a pharisee.

Bellatrix Lestrange: This woman is just plain mean and nasty.  The one woman  who fit this bill, was a queen of Israel, Jezebeel.

Delores Umbridge : King Herod, he might be a guy, but it works. He wants power and everyone to love him. Besides, would you really put it past Umbridge to kill a bunch of children? I didn't think so. She's so evil.... ::shudders::

Peter Pettigrew (Wormtail):  This one is obvious. He's friends with one of the heroes until he gets scared and wants power. Then he betrays his friends in the worst way. Judas to a "T".

Lucious Malfoy: He's rich, stuck up, power hungry,
and refuses to let go of his "slave" Dobby the house
elf. I hear myself singing "Pharaoh, Pharaoh,
OOOOOOHHHHH BABY let my people (elf) go!"

Some people we would LOVE to think of Bible characters are:

Sirius Black
The Dementors
Dobby the House Elf
Narcissa Malfoy
Crabbe & Goyle
Remus Lupin
Tonks
The Weasley Twins
Lavender Brown
Cho Chang
Cedric Diggory

So.... do you all have any suggestions? Who would you cast in Harry Potter? Or any other movie?

  3. Dumbledore would def be Moses...and why not Ron be Paul? Didn't he preach a lot of good things about Jesus? This was a cool post! Thanks for posting on 20sb! Happy Blogging!

  4. I love this!

I think I see Neville as more of a Peter type- great heart, lots of courage, but mucks it up sometimes without really meaning to.

    Great post!
