I Spent The Weekend With a Zombie

As far as weekends go, this past one was pretty quiet. At first I wasn't sure how I felt about that.

Okay, that's a lie. I knew exactly how I felt about it.

I hate quiet weekends. They make me feel like I fail at being in my 20's. Aren't 20-something girls supposed to be galavanting around town on the weekends, going to bars, having dates with cute boys, and laughing with their friends? Because if that's what we're supposed to do, I'm failing at being a 20-something female.

Friday night I went to Target (which consisted of a child calling me an "elf" and buying a new journal which was on sale) and drove by a local coffee shop that was supposed to have live music that night. I was going to be adventurous! People go out on their own all the time! That's how you make new friends! It was going to be fun and exciting!

But as I drove by I found that parking was FAR too easy (which NEVER happens on a Friday night in that part of town) and as I peeked inside the building looked empty. A few people were there, but not many. I decided to head home and finish reading Anne Rice's Memnoch the Devil while watching re-runs of Say Yes to the Dress and Sex and the City. HOLY CRAP AMAZING BOOK. It really makes you think and when you know about Anne Rice's faith journey... it's just really fascinating to read her writing. Also - Lestat is awesome. Also, my sister is engaged so I feel like I had an excuse for watching those shows.

When I went to bed it was then that I realized I probably should have gone to the local Lutheran high school's homecoming basketball game like a good youth minister. Oops. People need to remind me of these things.

Saturday I slept in a bit, stayed in my pajamas all morning, made coffee (spilled water on myself in the process), had nutella on toast, and began reading Warm Bodies. You probably noticed this if you were watching my Facebook and Twitter because I was fan-girling all over the place about it.

This was in the first page and a half, and it broke my heart. Clearly having my heart shattered is needed for me and reading.
AH SO GOOD. Thus far it is my favorite book I've read this year. Yes, it's only February. However, last year I read The Night Circus in January/February and it stayed my favorite book all year and was only rivaled by The Fault in our Stars and A Place Beyond Courage.

Eventually I did get myself out of the apartment and ran some errands downtown. Which led me to a few dead-ends. Sigh. If anyone can help me find music from the 1930's that's arranged for small ensembles to sing... let me know.

However, I did see some friendly faces at a coffee shop and it was a nice day to walk around downtown for a bit. A little chilly, but not bad.

The rest of the night I let myself be woo'd by a romantic zombie and Mr. Big.

Sunday morning was the usual. Doing my duties at church and Sunday school. I was able to share my sisters engagement with some people which was really fun.

For the remainder of the day I kept reading living vicariously through R and Julie and Carrie Bradshaw and her friends.

Much to my dismay - I finished Warm Bodies. Oh if only good books could go on forever. I was tempted to go watch the movie again, but my bank account reminded me that this wasn't the wiesest choice.

I planned my chapel for the Lutheran high school that I was going to lead for the next morning.

Honestly... by the end of Sunday I felt relaxed and happy. Yes, some plans with friends fell through and I spent most of my time lying around like a bum on the couch. But it was nice. Scattered through the last few days were text and phone conversations with my mom and sister and few friends. I spent some much needed quality time with Bandit. And of course read books.

So maybe quiet weekends aren't so bad after all. Although clearly I need the undead in my novels to keep me entertained. (Memnoch the Devil is about vampires, Warm Bodies is about zombies in case you haven't caught onto that yet.)

Now all I need is a zombie boyfriend - right?

I think I have a problem...
