Mom and Sister Bonding

Day 10: Favorite Classic Book

This is probably going to sound crazy cliche and girly - but I don't care!

I love Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin.

I saw the ridiculously long version of the movie with Colin Firth when I was a kid, and loved it. I may not have completely understood what was happening - cause I was a kid, and terribly blonde - but I remember my mom explaining different things to me like why the younger daughter made a big deal of entering the house before her sisters when she got married. (Even then I thought Lydia was ridiculously silly! And that's saying a lot coming from me.) Yet I didn't read the book until college, which is sad for me.

But the new movie with Kiera Knightly was coming out soon, and I figured that I should read the book first before the movie. Also... the guy I had a crush on at the time was reading it as well and was LOVING it. Which naturally - what girl wouldn't like a guy like that? Seriously. Then since the newest movie came out, I have also seen some of the older versions as well. Some of which are just plain terrible! (Oh Laurence Oliver - that was not one of your finer moments.)

I love the characters in this story. The mom is hilarious, Mr. Collins is unbelievably annoying but you can't help but laugh, and Lizzy is a wonderful, headstrong heroine, but still can be girly and loves her family dearly.

And Mr. Darcy...

Oh Mr. Darcy...

Are there really enough words to say how awesome he is? I mean, really.

Although I did laugh when he proposed for the first time and Lizzy went off on him for a page and a half. When you read the book - it does kind of come out of no where. I would have gone off one him too!

But it's not just the love story - it's also the relationships within the family that I love. They are fun and goofy and very obviously love each other. It's so obvious how loyal they are to one another, even when someone messes up. They can tease and play, but also comfort and stick by each other's side. I just love it. It's the perfect book and movie(s) to watch with your mom and sisters because you can laugh along with them because you know what that bond is.

So... thank you Mom for introducing me to the Bennett family!

By the way- I refuse to read  Pride and Prejudice with Zombies. Just... no.

  1. Pride and Prejudice was one of two books I took with me on a three week trip to France in high school. I had them both finished before we even landed in Paris. So I just wound up reading those two (the other one was Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier) over and over again.

I think I read P&P about six times in those three weeks... Gave me a good head start for when we studied it in English the following year!! ;)

I know I've said it to you before, but I can't not say it not - I HATE the Keira Knightley version!!!

  2. PS. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is pretty awesome. Mr Darcy is kind of smutty. The subsequent ones (Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, Android Karenina etc) are a bit rubbish though...
